lms_has_clearfix=&#8221;0&#8243; offset=&#8221;vc_col-lg-8&#8243;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;subtittle-open-post&#8221;]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On a hill overlooking the beautiful foothills of the Himalayas, not far from Bir in northern India, is a learning center that teaches people, often Westerners like myself, about living life more sustainably and compassionately.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I didn\u2019t know exactly what this meant or what to expect when I climbed the hill to this incredibly thoughtfully constructed, elegant, yet rustic campus called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dharmalaya.in\/about\/about-dharmalaya-institute\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dharmalaya Institute for Compassionate Living<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What unfolded was a profoundly moving week that combined the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experience<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of living close to the land with that of daily meditation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We washed our dishes with ashes (no detergents on site), enjoyed the rich taste of the organically grown vegetables, and lived in cabins made of the earth, the Himalayan adobe, harvested from the surrounding lands and crafted by local artisans. She explained that compassionate living addresses all the fundamental aspects of life, like food, shelter, lifestyle, occupation, and so on. \u201cFor each of those areas of life, we ask, how might we do less harm and be of greater help?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mark Moore and Mai-Linh Leminbach, both Mingyur Rinpoche students and Tergar guides who facilitate <a href=\"https:\/\/joy.tergar.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joy of Living<\/a> workshops, are the directors of Dharmalaya, which they co-founded in 2009 and employs ten full-time local village staff. The institute is a unique combination of a school for creative changemakers, an environmental nonprofit, and a retreat center.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of Dharmalaya\u2019s programs focus on \u201cinner and outer sustainability.\u201d Examples of the outer are natural building, permaculture, organic gardening, design, and eco-architecture. Inner examples include meditation and yoga retreats, Joy of Living retreats, compassionate communication, wise leadership, and other valuable skills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMost of our programs \u2014 and my personal favorites \u2014 blend the inner and the outer, taking a contemplative approach to the outer and a practical approach to the inner,\u201d said Mark, an eco-social entrepreneur, experiential educator, and author. \u201cThis makes them well-suited to anyone who wants to be a compassion-driven agent of change in our world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Focusing on \u201cinner and outer\u201d is key to the Dharmalaya vision. \u201cIf outer sustainability is living in harmony with nature as we conceive of it in the larger world, inner sustainability is living in harmony with our own true nature. He had the good fortune to attend an \u201cextraordinarily <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">human\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> public alternative school in Colorado where aboriginal rites of passage inspired the curriculum. This was designed, as Mark said, \u201cto prepare students to \u2018understand the world that is and create the world that ought to be.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While study gave him an intellectual understanding of our planet\u2019s ecological crisis, it was five months of living in a village in Nepal that was pivotal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn the high Himalayas, my homestay family and fellow villagers were living in absolute harmony with nature,\u201d he said. \u201cThey were mindful of interdependence and lived accordingly. A tree was never cut without planting seven in its place. Water was treated as something sacred and precious. This just makes so much sense, right?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBut coming back down from the mountain (literally and figuratively) after that idyllic immersion in natural living, and seeing with fresh eyes the destruction that comes with so-called \u2018development,\u2019 was devastating.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ve lived with this cocktail of inspiration and devastation cohabitating in my heart ever since, and it\u2019s fuel for my work,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With this guiding inspiration, he would be further buoyed by a life-changing conversation with His Holiness the Dalai Lama, who offered him an hour of insightful guidance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI shared an inspiration that I\u2019d had about a school for contemplative, experiential learning about compassionate living,\u201d said Mark. \u201cHis Holiness\u2019 strong encouragement set the dream in motion.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For her part, Mai-Linh, who works as faculty at Dharmalaya, was motivated to support people in developing their natural potential. \u201cI wanted to contribute to creating a place that would offer a nourishing, healing refuge for people to learn \u2014 and unlearn \u2014 in an environment that supports inner transformation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mai-Linh had wished to actively work towards change since childhood. \u201cGrowing up, I had the sense that nature was sacred, and I felt heartbroken to see how we humans were destroying it.\u201d<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/12&#8243; lms_has_clearfix=&#8221;0&#8243; offset=&#8221;vc_col-lg-2 vc_hidden-xs&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row u_row_style=&#8221;1&#8243; lms_row_has_bk_offset=&#8221;0&#8243; lms_row_bk_columns_offset=&#8221;0&#8243; u_row_enrollment_restriction=&#8221;0&#8243;][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/6&#8243; lms_has_clearfix=&#8221;0&#8243; offset=&#8221;vc_col-lg-3 vc_hidden-xs&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243; lms_has_clearfix=&#8221;0&#8243; offset=&#8221;vc_col-lg-6&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;126585&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1716248659420{margin-top: 26px !important;}&#8221;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;subtittle-open-post&#8221;]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Tergar retreat at Dharmalaya in 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/6&#8243; lms_has_clearfix=&#8221;0&#8243; offset=&#8221;vc_col-lg-3 vc_hidden-xs&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row u_row_style=&#8221;1&#8243; lms_row_has_bk_offset=&#8221;0&#8243; lms_row_bk_columns_offset=&#8221;0&#8243; u_row_enrollment_restriction=&#8221;0&#8243;][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/12&#8243; lms_has_clearfix=&#8221;0&#8243; offset=&#8221;vc_col-lg-2 vc_hidden-xs&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;5\/6&#8243; lms_has_clearfix=&#8221;0&#8243; offset=&#8221;vc_col-lg-8&#8243;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1713326842033{padding-top: 20px !important;padding-bottom: 20px !important;}&#8221; el_class=&#8221;subtittle-open-post&#8221;]<b>AN ANCIENT MODEL<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those who come to Dharmalaya are of all ages, from high school to retirement, and come from every socioeconomic background. \u201cWhat they all have in common is a big heart and a wish to be a part of a more harmonious world,\u201d said Mark.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the vision for Dharmalaya may appear ahead of its time from a modern vantage point, as Mark said, the Dharmalaya model is about \u201cas old as it gets.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, he said,\u00a0 \u201cThe model has much in common with indigenous ways of learning around the world, such as the \u201cgurukul\u201d system of ancient India, where a few students would gather under a tree with their teacher and talk about everything that really matters for a meaningful life and a harmonious, flourishing world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFrom my perspective, what\u2019s happening in the world as we look around is an indication that it\u2019s past time for modern society to learn from old wisdom about what works, to help us address the whole person and the whole system to create whole solutions,\u201d said Mark.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Dharmalaya vision is growing globally, with Mark and the Earthville team creating a sister school in Colorado. Called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/earthvilleinstitute.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earthville Institute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the eco-campus incorporates natural building and organic farming and will include a retreat center in the future.
